Born on April 28, 1812 at Belleville, New Jersey. As a young man, he moved
to Grosse Ile, Michigan, a village near Detroit, and it was from Michigan
that he was commissioned directly into the Army as a Second Lieutenant of
Dragoons on October 13, 1837.

Died January 6 1910, Washington DC
Pre-War Profession Commissioned as 2nd Lt. in 1st Dragoons in 1837, Mexican
war, quartermaster duty. War Service August 1861 Major in Quartermasters
Department, retained in a staff duties in Quartermaster's Department
throughout the war, May 1863 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers. Brevet
Promotions Maj. Gen. U.S.V. March 13 1865, Maj. Gen. U.S.A. March 13 1865.
Post War Career Army service in the Quartermaster's Dept., retired 1882
after forty-five years of duty.

Philip Van Courtlandt
d. November 5, 1831
American General, Revolutionary War. A hero of the Battle of Saratoga, Van
Courtlandt served in Poor's Brigade as Colonel of the 2nd and Lieutenant
Colonel of the 4th New York Regiments. He was promoted to Brigadier General
in 1783. The son of Pierre Van Courtlandt of Courtlandt Manor in New York,
and the husband of Catherine Ogden, whom he wed in 1762, the long-lived
officer's name was inadvertently omitted from the church plaque honoring the
Revolutionary War veterans interred in Belleville's Dutch Reformed Church
Yard.

Stephen V.C. Van Renssalaer
Birth: unknown Death: May. 20, 1885
Civil War Union Army Officer. Commissioned Captain and commander of Company
A, 13th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 22, 1861, and fought with
his unit at the Battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and
Gettysburg. On December 28, 1863 he was transferred to the 3rd New Jersey
Volunteer cavalry, and was promoted to Major. Served with the cavalry until
his resignation from the service on October 18, 1864.

Warren Kimble
- contemporary folk artist
(Belleville's answer to Nutley's Martha Stewart)
Warren Kimble grew up in Belleville, New Jersey, often spending time on his
grandparents' farm in the rural countryside. He received his degree in fine
arts from Syracuse University in 1957. After pursuing a career in
advertising, he moved to Vermont and taught art at Castleton State College.
Kimble began painting full time in 1983. His work found its way into art
galleries in Woodstock, Vermont and, within a relatively short time, he has
become the country's most successful folk artist.
