January 4, 1841 - Bridge across Passaic River destroyed. Jan. 16, 1907 - Ordinance voted to establish Belleville Police.
February 1, 1927 - Cora Stickle, first woman member of Belleville Board of Education, appointed. Feb. 14, 1839 -Manufacturer's Bank of Belleville forced to close. Feb. 17, 1755 - Ferry service across the Passaic River established. Feb. 19, 1746 - King George II grants a charter to Christ Church. Feb. 21, 1876 - City Charter of Belleville repealed and it becomes a township again. Feb. 23, 1839 - Belleville established.
March 3, 1926 - First P.T.A. formed. March 10, 1903 - Second Belleville flood. March 12, 1874 - Franklin receives township charter, breaks from Belleville. March 17, 1912 - Francis Hendricks dies in NYC. March 27, 1874 - Belleville granted a City Charter. March 28, 1922 - Recreation commission established. March 31, 1924 - Groundbreaking for first synagogue of Congregation Ahavath Achim, 317 Washington Avenue.
April 8, 1839 - Belleville becomes a township. April 13, 1857 - Steamboat "Belleville" goes into service. April 14, 1916 - Captain Salmon becomes first Belleville firefighter to die in the line of duty. April 15, 1956 - Ground breaking for "new" Christ Church. April 18, 1804 - Belleville establishes a school system. April 27, 1874 - Belleville as a city holds first meeting.
May 22, 1804 - Dutch Reformed Church steeple destroyed in a storm. May 28, 1777 - Capt. Abraham Speer is commissioned in the 2nd Essex Regiment. May 30, 1932 - Plaque erected at VFW Hall to honor WWI veterans.
June 2, 1882 - Belleville Fire Department organized. June 3, 1985 - James J. Cozzarelli Jr. Children's Room opens at main library. June 9, 1835 - Counterfeiting ring operating in Belleville is broken. June 26, 1797 - Belleville's name "Beautiful Village" in French, approved by prominent townspeople.
July 4, 1793 - Second River becomes "Belleville". July 12, 1913 - Cornerstone of Town Hall laid by Mayor Denison July 13, 1720 - Land for Dutch Reformed purchased from Francis Speer. July 20, 1688 - Capt. William Sanford buys 15,380 acres of meadows along Passaic River from the Indians.
August 3, 1897 - Town Council passes ordinance limiting horse speed and requiring bells on bicycles.
September 2, 1777 - The battle of Second River fought. Sept. 24, 1882 - First Belleville flood.
October 4, 1836 - Original St. Peter's Church completed. Oct. 7, 1911 - First Library Board meeting in Carnegie Library. Oct. 20, 1914 - Belleville accepts Commission form of government. Oct. 26, 1986 - Silver Lake Branch Library renamed Mrs. Richard A. Shafter Branch Library.
November 8, 1910 - Belleville votes to become a Town instead of a Township. Nov. 22, 1776 - George Washington passed through Belleville
December 8, 1931 - Father Edwin Fields, pastor of St. Peter's Church, dies. Dec. 27, 1875 - Belleville Council directs Newark Horse Car Railroad to remove rails, ties, etc., from Courtlandt Street.
